WRITING ABOUT TECHNOLOGY

I have published articles about technology since 1989, with a focus on the Apple Macintosh. Although I have covered essentially every nook and cranny of that market in hundreds of articles, my deepest areas of expertise are on the hardware side, with a special emphasis on microprocessor technology, storage, and system design.

My articles have appeared in MacAddict, Macworld, PC World, MacUser, Mac|Life, Personal Computing, Publish, ComputerLife, and others. MacAddict, at which I was editor in chief for over six years, had a breezy, decidedly consumer-focused style, so my writing for it had an informal voice. As a freelance technology writer, however, I have also written deeply technical white papers and marketing materials.

This website contains a representative sample of my writings, mostly from MacAddict. Just click on the subheads below to link to examples in each category.

FEATURE ARTICLES - SOLE AUTHORSHIP

At MacAddict I often wrote articles introducing each new item of Apple hardware, explaining their new technology in detail. I also wrote a number of other types of articles, including tips, historical and technical overviews, and more. Since leaving MacAddict I have branched out into more-general industry and market analyses.

FEATURE ARTICLES - SHARED AUTHORSHIP

As MacAddict's editor in chief, I initiated a team approach to many of our feature stories. Doing so allowed us to pool our editors' varied areas of expertise and offer highly comprehensive articles to our readers, while at the same time sharing the prestige and personal satisfaction of writing a cover story.

DEEP TECH - MAC|LIFE

For the February 2007 through March 2008 issues of Mac|Life, I wrote a column that explored one of my passions: explaining cutting-edge technology to a non-technical audience. After the March 2008 issue, I chose to end my eight-year relationship with Future US, the publishers of Mac|Life.

EDITORIALS - MACADDICT

The editor's page is every magazine's bully pulpit, and I tried to use MacAddict's not merely to promote the magazine's contents, but also to touch upon major computing-related issues of the day - all with a light touch, as befitted MacAddict's voice.

TECH HUMOR

One of my tenets of magazine construction is that the back page of any magazine should be a window into its soul - a reader should be able to open to it and immediately get a sense of the magazine's style. MacAddict's Shut Down page showed us to be geeks who didn't take themselves too seriously.
